Kara Flaherty's Reflection on Her Time in Ghana
by Kara Flaherty, OLG Parishioner, 2018 Missionary, Junior at Edina High School
My time in Ghana was eye-opening in many ways. It definably made me rethink my priorities and what was truly important. One thing that significantly changed was my appreciation for my ability to be able to attend school. The opportunity to go to school past childhood years is rare in Ghana. The kids that attend OLAG respect education as I have never seen before.
I believe the respect comes from the gratitude they have from being able to attend such a beautiful, clean and organized campus. OLAG Senior High is unlike the rest of Ghana. It stands out as the nicest and most beautiful building. Plus, the grounds are kept clean which makes it so much more appealing. Every student who attends OLAG has a higher level of respect.
They interacted with me like adults and I was impressed at their mannerism and curiosity about my life. It seemed like when they asked me questions, the really did want to know the answer. They didn’t just ask to be polite.
Overall, the school has provided these kids with an amazing opportunity; an education. That is more than most Ghanaian kids could ever ask for. I can tell they thank God every day for letting them be in such an amazing place. They are lucky kids.
